2] When you judge your model in terms of its simplicity, you will tend to study things which lend themselves to simple explanations. It’s not that mathematical explanations are overly simple—perhaps theoretical elegance is the preferred term here—but that this approach can only investigate phenomena that hold together well when you reduce them to their essence. This is true of the kind of things studied by computational cognitive scientists. They can point to the equation and say, “Here, at core, is what is happening.”

Novels, like experience itself, don’t work that way. They don’t hold together well when you reduce them to a bare bones plot. Their essence dissipates. Likewise there is no fundamental computational model that can distill experience into its primordial form. Unlike computational models, novels are not their essence. That’s why the first thing you learn in high school English is not to write “plot summary.” If the summary was all that was needed to get the author’s point across, they would’ve just written that to begin with.

Some aspects of cognition may lend themselves to the reductionism of computational models. But humans, in their wholistic experience, are not simple.

Occam’s razor only takes you so far.

1] And here’s another thing to consider… Cognitive scientists don’t actually evaluate models solely on whether they are empirically validated. Most models languish in scientific obscurity. The p value maybe close to zero; but so is the citation count.

Rather, a small subset of models which go through the rigors of experimental verification are actually determined to be useful within the larger scientific community. These are the ones that get cited.

So besides simple popularity metrics such as citations, how do cognitive scientists determine whether a model is any good? There’s a simple answer: interpretation. Someone with the relevant expertise—one who has thought critically about other models which attempt to do the same thing—must look closely at the model and determine what works and what’s lacking. Then other people with a similar expertise must debate whether that evaluation is correct or not.

I think it’s somewhat provocative that these are essentially no different than the mechanisms we have for evaluating novels. There are simple popular metrics such as book sales, which probably tell us at least something about whether the story resonates with readers, whether they find the model useful in one capacity or another. Then beyond that we have to rely on the in-depth considerations of a community of thoughtful, well-trained readers.

Great thinking, beautifully crafted essay, as always!

One other difference I can see is that, while cognitive science tends to be focused on the shared building blocks of experience, novelists tend to be more interested in the diversity of experience- I’d even say the diversity of shared experience, because if anything a novel is about the interplay of different experiences within a common setting. An experiment for a novelist is discovering a setting in which that diversity is observable and has real consequences.

For the novelist, what is interesting is the diversity that’s possible despite what we have in common “out there”, while for a cognitive scientist what’s interesting is how much we have in common “in there”, below the level of experience (at least from a 3rd person point of view).

And yeah! The illusory desirability of cognitive universals—which I think is a part of what you're talking about—is something I think about a lot. In the process of editing the essay down I ended up cutting my discussion of it. Really getting into the problem would've opened up a whole new frontier, which is probably best left to another post.

At any rate, I'm reminded of a passage from the anthropologist Clifford Geertz—who is, not coincidentally, my favorite thinker on the topic of meaning—in his essay "The Impact of the Concept of Culture on the Concept of Man." His contention is that by the time you get around to describing something that is universal, you find yourself with a category devoid of content. He's talking about culture, but I think it applies to cognition as well. Basically, it's not the universals don't exist. It's just that a category that encompasses so much ends up containing very little!

He writes:

"There is a logical conflict between as­serting that, say, 'religion,' 'marriage,' or 'property' are empirical universals and giving them very much in the way of specific content, for to say that they are empirical universals is to say that they have the same content, and to say they have the same content is to fly in the face of the undeniable fact that they do not."

As an example, he discusses the claim that a concept of the afterlife is universal across all religions: "To make the generalization about an afterlife stand up alike for the Confucians and the Calvinists, the Zen Buddhists and the Tibetan Buddhists, one has to define it in most general terms, indeed—so gen­eral, in fact, that whatever force it seems to have virtually evaporates."

Anyway, I like your concept of the diversity of shared experience. I'll have to think about that more.

Yup: I think the empirical method is well-suited to discovering how "reality" works, but it's got a lot more limitations when it comes to "truth". I don't normally think about it in those terms though. Instead, I think of it like this:

The scientific method is an empirical approach in search of laws. But we also need an interpretative approach in search of meaning. It's in the interaction of those approaches that we really start to uncover something approximating what you're calling "truth."

Wow, I am saving this to reread. Excellent and beautifully written work on how creative outlets are functionally models to help unpack experience....at least that's at least what I gather partly, if I'm not mistaken.

I stumbled across your page by happenstance and I am so pleased that I did. Your ability to think from a “middle perspective” or “3rd way” is inspiring. As a graduate therapist, this hits home for me when it comes to evidence-based therapy and has been something I’ve been wrestling with more and more. I’m sure you’re aware of the term, but in the event you’re not it’s the idea of therapies that can be deemed “effective” in a controlled scenario. Life is messy. When I meet with clients, their lives are not in a controlled scenario and often the things that “work” or produce change are not things that are the most “effective”. Take narrative therapy for example. It is not technically an evidence based treatment, yet, it follows with your perspective of the novelist in the construction of fictions that we orient ourselves towards and live by. With narrative therapy, clients are invited to “reauthor” their story. This is a phenomenologically informed therapy and I think what you are getting at when it comes to computational models is that if we strictly functioned as machines we would technically have the ability to correct these error codes. The problem is that we experience anxiety and depression; error codes. And we experience then a lot. Could it be safe to say that by approaching ourselves strictly in a mechanistic way it potentially exacerbates our symptom? Could then it be safe to say that what helps heal is a novelist approach?
